Nicholas Ong, Pianist

Born in Malaysia, Nicholas Ong began piano lessons at age six and made his first concert appearance on national television three years later. He was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study in France at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, where he graduated with the highest distinction. Mr. Ong later went to the United States to broaden his musical horizon and experience, obtaining a Masters of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, and is currently a Doctoral Fellow at the Juilliard School.
Mr. Ong
is a prizewinner of numerous piano competitions, including the Yvonne Lefebure International Piano Competition in France. He has performed as soloist with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the contemporary ensemble 2e2m and the New Juilliard Ensemble and appeared at New York’s Rock Hotel PianoFest, Focus! Festival, the Chopin Festival in Paris, Festival de l’Orangerie, Saint-Riquier, Jeunes Pianistes Virtuoses in Lyon, the Villa Medicis Festival in Rome and concerts across Europe and Asia. A sought-after accompanist, Mr. Ong collaborates with other young distinguish musicians in concerts and master-classes. He has a particular affection for the French repertoire as well as contemporary music and interactive music for piano and computers.
As a teacher, Mr. Ong believes the importance of the teacher’s role as an influence to students. He adapts his teaching style to the individual and finds pieces that match their interest and abilities, while building upon their technique and musicianship.
